About us

World BEYOND War is a nonprofit organization with chapters around the world using educational, activist, and media work to advance the cause of ending all war and establishing lasting peace. WBW has a board, advisory board, staff, and chapter organizers all over the globe and works with allied organizations, many of which are WBW affiliates.

WBW was founded on January 1st, 2014, when co-founders David Hartsough and David Swanson, together with a group of like-minded peace advocates set out to create a global movement to abolish the institution of war itself, not just the “war of the day.” If war is ever to be abolished, they decided, then it must be taken off the table as a viable option. Just as there is no such thing as “good” or necessary slavery, there is no such thing as a “good” or necessary war. Both institutions are abhorrent and never acceptable, no matter the circumstances.

So, if we can’t use war to resolve international conflicts, what can we do? Finding a way to transition to a global security system that is supported by international law, diplomacy, collaboration, and human rights, and defending those things with nonviolent action rather than the threat of violence, is the heart of WBW.

Our work includes education and media production that dispels myths, such as “War is natural” or “We have always had war,” and shows people not only that war should be abolished, but also that it actually can be. We engage in all variety of nonviolent actions and campaigns that move the world in the direction of ending all war.

Job Overview

The Communications and Media Relations Manager at World BEYOND War will coordinate the organisation’s communications strategy, ensuring consistent branding, messaging, and visual identity across departments. The role involves developing and implementing creative communications plans to increase awareness of the organisation’s educational initiatives, peace activism, campaigns, and resources.

World BEYOND War is a global organisation with staff and volunteers producing educational courses, reports, articles, books, videos, and other resources while organising creative, nonviolent campaigns to influence public understanding and public policy on war and peace.

The Communications and Media Relations Manager will focus on increasing earned media coverage, expanding the organisation’s reach, and encouraging more people to engage with its work through its website, educational materials, donations, local chapters, and activities. The position will involve building relationships with traditional media outlets and independent media producers, including podcasters, influencers, bloggers, radio programmes, and book reviewers.

Working closely with the Executive Director, Social Media Manager, and other departments, the successful candidate will help strengthen the organisation’s public profile, promote its campaigns, and communicate its mission to wider audiences.

Communications Strategy: Develop and implement creative communications plans that strengthen organisational visibility, maintain consistent branding, and align messaging across departments.

Media Relations and Outreach: Promote the organisation’s stories, spokespeople, articles, reports, books, and videos through outreach to major media outlets and independent media producers, including podcasters, influencers, bloggers, radio shows, and book reviewers.

Campaign Promotion: Collaborate with staff and volunteers to plan and coordinate communications strategies that maximise media coverage and public engagement for peace and nonviolent activism campaigns.

Chapter and Volunteer Support: Work with volunteer chapter organisers to plan, promote, and communicate local activities, campaigns, and initiatives.

Graphic Design and Video Production: Design and produce visual communication materials, including graphics for billboards, banners, and websites, as well as videos incorporating footage created by volunteer activists.

Campaign and Organising Collaboration: Work with the Organizing Director and organising staff to develop and promote activist campaigns in collaboration with local chapters.

Educational Communications: Partner with the Education Director to promote educational projects, courses, reports, and other learning resources.

Website and Digital Communications: Collaborate with the Executive Director and Technology Director to support the effective use of the organisation’s website in communicating its work and engaging audiences.

Fundraising Communications: Work with the Development Director and development team to promote fundraising initiatives and encourage donations that support the organisation’s mission.

Public Engagement and Organisational Growth: Increase awareness of World BEYOND War, drive engagement with its resources and website, attract supporters, encourage chapter participation, and strengthen involvement in its activities.

All staff attend a weekly staff meeting and, when needed, a monthly Board meeting.
